Building Literacy in the Content Areas

Building Literacy in the Content Areas

Thomas G. Gunning

This website provides a number of reading and study aids. For each chapter, you will find a listing of Learner Objectives and a Chapter Overview. A multiple choice Practice Test for each chapter is also available. You can use the test to help assess and review your knowledge of the material covered. Items that cause difficulty are indications of topics needing review or clarification.

Internet Links to appropriate websites are also noted for each chapter. Clicking on the link, which is highlighted in blue, will take you to the website. Because the field of literacy is always changing, there is an Updates section for each chapter. The Updates section highlight new methods, materials, research and other relevant information that has come to light after Building Literacy in the Content Areas was published.

To give you a chance to see what other professionals and students are thinking about key issues in literacy, a Discussion board has been created so that those reading Building Literacy in the Content Areas can share their thoughts and experiences. For each chapter, a question about a key issue has been posed. You are invited to respond to the question and to read the responses of others. You can also pose questions of your own.

To get started, choose a chapter from the pull-down menu on the top left labeled "Jump to . . ."
