Evaluating Union Goals

As discussed in this chapter, unions can pursue any of a number of goals. The AFL-CIO's home page provides links to the Web sites of several unions, and reviewing these sites can help you determine the objectives these unions have selected.

Navigation: Go to http://www.aflcio.org/ to visit the AFL-CIO's home page.

Application: Perform the indicated operations, and answer the following questions.

  1. Click on About Us, and then click on Mission Statement. Does the AFL-CIO claim to represent the interests of all workers or just workers in specific firms or industries? Can you discern what broad wage and employment strategy the AFL-CIO pursues?

  2. Back up to About Us and click on Unions of the AFL-CIO. Explore two or three of these Web sites. Do these unions appear to represent the interests of all workers or just workers in specific firms or industries? What general wage and employment strategies do these unions appear to pursue?
