What the PHR Exam Is
The Professional in Human Resources (PHR) examination is a written test designed to assess knowledge of current human resources practices. The exam focuses specifically on the technical and operational aspects of human resources practices. Successful completion of the examination signifies that one has mastered the current human resources body of knowledge and thus serves a symbol of professional achievement. An individual who successfully completes the PHR examination is certified as a "Professional in Human Resources" by the Human Resources Certification Institute of the Society for Human Resource Management.
What is the Exam's Purpose?
Successful completion of the PHR certification exam offers:
- Nationally recognized evidence of professional competence and achievement.
- A credential for career advancement.
- Recognition of professional achievement through the use of the certification designation (the letters "PHR" following one's name) on business correspondence and by displaying the PHR certificate.
Who Takes the PHR Exam?
Candidates for the exam include individuals seeking a national credential in the field of human resources, for career advancement and/or recognition of professional achievement. To be eligible for the exam, an individual must have at least two years of experience as a practitioner, consultant, educator, or researcher in the human resources field. This experience must be at the exempt level. The Human Resources Certification Institute, the national human resources credentialing body, strongly recommends that candidates for the PHR exam have at least two to four years of human resources experience at the operational level.
At What Point in One's Career is the Exam Taken?
Generally, the exam is taken at the early to mid-career point. Designation as a PHR at this point offers maximum benefit in terms of career advancement. However, the exam may be taken at any point in one's career, provided the eligibility requirements are met.
