Conclusion

The United States expanded to the Pacific Ocean largely assuming present-day continental boundaries. Migration fueled expansion which occurred by war and acquisition. Gold also prompted migration to California. Obtaining so much new land raised the question of the extension of slavery which became a major political issue.
